HARVEY, a Pulitzer Prize winning comedy, is the story of a perfect gentleman, Elwood
P. Dowd, and his best friend, Harvey -- a pooka, who is a six-foot tall, invisible
rabbit. When Elwood begins introducing Harvey around town, his embarrassed sister,
Veta Louise, and her daughter, Myrtle Mae, determine to commit Elwood to a sanitarium.
A mistake is made, however, and Veta is committed rather than Elwood! Eventually,
the mistake is realized, and a frantic search begins for Elwood and the invisible
pooka, which ends with Elwood appearing, voluntarily, at the sanitarium. In the end,
however, Veta realizes that she loves her brother and his invisible his best friend
just as they are, and doesnt want either of them to change.

Characters of the Play:
Elwood P. Dowd A genial, polite, affable man (about 47) whose best friend is Harvey, an invisible
six-foot-three-and-a-half-inch pookah (rabbit-like spirit). Elwood is kind, sociable,
and unconcerned with social convention.
Harvey The unseen companion of Elwood, described in the play as a six-foot, three-and-one-half-inch
pookah (pooka/pookah) who may be either imaginary or real; central to the plays fantasy/comic
premise.
Veta Louise Simmons Elwoods social-climbing sister and Myrtle Maes mother; embarrassed by Elwoods
behavior and initially determined to have him committed to a sanitarium.
Myrtle Mae Simmons Vetas daughter (a young woman, late teens/early twenties); anxious about marriageability
and concerned about her mothers social standing.

much of the action occurs.
Betty Chumley Dr. Chumleys wife, a pleasant woman involved in the sanitarium scenes and town
society.

the sanitariums strong arm and a comic, practical presence.
Lyman Sanderson, M.D. A young psychiatrist at Chumleys Rest; earnest and somewhat inexperienced, involved
in the mistaken-commitment comedy.
Ruth Kelly, R.N. Head nurse at Chumleys Rest (young and pretty); involved in the sanitarium staffs
interactions with Elwood and Veta.
Judge Omar Gaffney An elderly family friend and lawyer (appears in the Dowd household and later at
the sanitarium), who becomes involved in Vetas attempts to control events.
E. J. Lofgren A wise, ultimately sensible cab driver who appears at key moments and offers plainspoken

Vetas social anxieties.
